I can't open my evolution

Asked by Maria

Last week I installed open office 3 with a lot of effort because nothing was working. Still my evolution was working perfectly. Today, the up date manager said it had to install something but had to do a partial update, so I let it do it and now my evolution is not opening
This is what the error it gives me
Failed to execute child process "evolution" (No such file or directory)
Can you help me?

Please be sure your system is fully updated/upgraded with no pending packages or errors:

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

Then try to start Evolution as usual... then if are still in issue with evolution...

Please try to reinstall it, still using a terminal type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install evolution

Then try again...

Hope this helps

May i suggest you to try with Thunderbird as mail client

Thunderbird: mail/news client with RSS and integrated spam filter support
Thunderbird is a lightweight mail/news/RSS client, based on the Mozilla suite.
It supports different mail accounts (POP, IMAP, Gmail), has an integrated learning Spam filter, and offers easy organization of mails with tagging and virtual folders. Also, more features can be added by installing extensions.

To install Thunderbird simply search select and add it to your system using the System→Add/remove menu item

To install Thunderbird using terminal

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install thunderbird

You will find Thunderbird into Applications→Internet menu

Hope this helps

Installing Thunderbired is not an answer to a problem with Evolution. I am also struck by the same problem. Following an Update Manager "Partial Upgrade" Evolution was removed and because of package dependencies was not upgraded.;
Here is the result of sudo apt-get install evolution:

The following have unmet dependencies:
evolution: Depends: evolution-common (= 2.24.2-0ubuntu1) but 2.24.3-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Obviously the "Partial Upgrade" was defective and contained errors regarding evolution. This problem still persists and I would hope the right people are aware of it and will provide the correct packages and upgrade information. This is the first time I have seen a real problem with an update so it's hard to fault Ubuntu. I just hope I haven't lost my mail and contacts. I anyone has a real answer to this issue I would love to see it. Thanks.

So I did what you suggested and it didn't work so I tried to reinstall and it didn't work either, this is the info I got.
Sorry can you help me!

Reading package lists... Done

Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely thatthe package is simply not installable and a bug report againstthat package should be filed.he following information may help to resolve the situation:The following packages have unmet dependencies:= 2.24.2-0ubuntu1 <evolution: Depends: evolution-common but 2.24.3-0ubuntu1 is to be installed>E: Broken packages

I link this question to this reported bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/316918

I give the suggestion to install Thunderbird as a temporary (for me permanent) alternative to Evolution

Hope this helps
