To move the evolution account and mails to new computer

Asked by Djea

How do I move my evolution account with my messages etc to another computer using the same version of evolution? Is there an equivalent of the PST files in Microsoft Outlook?

Thanks,

Djea

I believe you need to copy the full .evolution directory which is in your $HOME folder to a suitable media, and then import it on the new machine using the Evolution's Menu->Import option.
Be careful what you're doing, I've never done it myself, so I could be wrong.

That will work, but there are two pitfalls you'll need to watch out for. The first is that you can't use a fat32 drive to do the transfer, since evolution uses some special characters such as # in filenames, and these files will not copy correctly. Secondly, you'll need to make sure that the permissions are set appropriately when you copy the folder over to the second computer.

If you must use a fat32 drive (most USB flash drives are fat32 by default, and will have to be formatted to change them to ext2/ext3) then use gzip and tar to compress the files while retaining the permissions, and then unzip them at the destination.

Can you help with this problem?
