Evolution stalls for about 15 seconds routinely

Asked by wayward4now

Especially noticeable when composing email, Evolution will stall for about 10-15 seconds. I can continue to type and when it unfreezes, my text will show up all at once. I've noticed it stall during other operations as well. When I opened "preferences" during entry it would stall, so it's not just during composing. It's irritating and I hope that the fix is simple. Thanks for all you do there. I don't know if this is relevant, but I cannot get links to open in Firefox either. I use Kubuntu 8.04 and it's completely updated and the KDE setup has Firefox as the default application.

Well, I'm completely updated and it still occurs. It's maddening. I fixed the link problem though. Why expire the question? It ain't fixed nor has anyone come up with any suggestions yet. Ric

I don't like Evolution too complex with many options that i don't need to send and receive mail...

May i suggest you to try with Thunderbird as mail client

Thunderbird: mail/news client with RSS and integrated spam filter support
Thunderbird is a lightweight mail/news/RSS client, based on the Mozilla suite.
It supports different mail accounts (POP, IMAP, Gmail), has an integrated learning Spam filter, and offers easy organization of mails with tagging and virtual folders. Also, more features can be added by installing extensions.

To install Thunderbird simply search select and add it to your system using the System→Add/remove menu item

To install Thunderbird using terminal

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install thunderbird

You will find Thunderbird into Applications→Internet menu

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply! I used Netscape for years and it had every tool on it's belt but the kitchen sink. I agree, great program. But, I would rather run Evolution for it's calendar and group scheduling features. I'm surrounded on all sides with MicroSoft users. I've used Evolution for years and have never seen it lock up for a short period, to interrupt my typing. Sometimes it's no more than 5 to 15 seconds. Sometimes longer. I'd like to find a fix for it, but I do appreciate your suggestion! Thank you for your time and courtesy. Ric

Ok. As a starting point i suggest you to monitor your system when Evolution is running
i suggest you use the top process monitor, so open a terminal and type:

top

you might discover some system app that load your system or a load of evolution itself...

Also install and try the wireshark app to investigate your lan traffic when Evolution is running...

Check also your system logs for errors or warning...

If Evolution has grammar control please also try to disable it... might be the message composing will be faster

Hope this helps
