Calendar entries created by Evolution on Exchange 2003 do not sync to Nokia handset

Asked by Nick Piggott

My company uses Microsoft Exchange 2003. I used both Outlook (WinXP) and Evolution (Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 LTS) desktop clients, and I have Nokia's "Mail for Exchange" application running on my N95 handset.

If I create a Calendar entry in Evolution, it's visible in Outlook and on Webmail, but does not sync to the Nokia phone. (The Nokia phone log reports them as "discarded").

If I create a Calendar entry in Outlook (or in Webmail), or if I edit (load/amend/save) an entry previously created in Evolution, it's visible in Evolution and it does correctly sync to the Nokia phone.

I don't have much access to debug, so I can't see if there is some subtle difference in data structure that is causing the problem. All visible fields appear to be identical regardless of how they are created/modified.

Versions:
Evolution (v2.22.3.1)
Nokia Mail for Exchange (2.07.000)
Microsoft Exchange 2003

Wow, i can't believe i found this question again! :))

I have just been stumbling around in Synaptic package manager and found this ...

"FetchExc retrieves emails using WebDAV (Outlook Web Access) and delivers it to an SMTP server or local mbox store."

I am not sure it's useful or if you still have the same problem but thought you'd want to know!

A long while ago as an IT Manager i had the problem of whether to even try getting my work place to move over to linux desktops and then perhaps a linux server later. While i was ostensibly primarily User Support and desktop systems the server was run by a right pair of idiots. The server would routinely crash every couple of days and the backup server wouldn't kick in until after a lot of fuss but they were determined that Windows was the best. Another factor was almost exactly this, communicating with a Microsoft Exchange server from a variety of devices/machines (we also had a couple of large and unwieldy Sage databases being misused so badly that they were quite unstable). As one of the idiots was one of the Companies Directors i eventually shelved even the dream of the company working less inefficiently but even so got fired for not fitting into the company's 'dynamic'

Anyway, good luck and i hope you do well
Regards from
Tom :)

Hello Tom - thanks for the contribution. The problem I'm facing is not with E-mail, and the various other adaptors that exist seem to merely map OWA into IMAP or SMTP, and not handle Calendar management.

The problem remains, even after a couple of updates to Evolution / Evolution-Exchange. It's a significant pull back on being able to commit to a Linux desktop in the business environment.

From viewing other bug reports, it appears it is a consistent problem for users of devices that sync onto mobile devices (both Symbian and Windows Mobile), and doesn't seem to be attractive any development effort to fix it.

Ahh, that's not so great. Glad to see it's gone all the way up to Bugzilla. I guess the patches so far don't help.

Good luck with this, regards from
Tom :)

This happens with my Windows mobile devices as well (HTC Touch and Touch Pro). A big issue for someone that is out of the office 80% of the time. I've actually missed three appointments due to sitting at Evolution when the call came in before tracing it to and Evolution/Exchange calendar issue. I now have to use the mobile device or Outlook to input appointments. Anyone have any ideas why these entries aren't making the cut for pushes to mobile client from MS Excange Server 2003?

HI Lyle
This is a very old question and Launchpad doesn't handle old questions well. If you can contribute usefully to the bug report then please do. I am sure they would like to get hardware specs or something of your machines.

You might find it more helpful to re-post this as a new question and see if anyone new on the Answers team has a good answer now
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+addquestion
or a more general linux forum such as
http://www.linuxquestions.org

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
