Can you modify 'new' contact layout?

Asked by Winnewbie

Hi

Is it possible to modify the contact layout, so that I can more quickly enter data for example from a business card. Right now I have to move between tabs. Alternatively does Evolution contact work with any business card reader programs?

You can modify the Contacts layout by going from the Contacts page into View, Current View. There you can select from one of the templates or create your own.

Hi

I did as you suggested but it did not produce expected results. Firstly I could not edit existing address, company or list views. As a result, I added a new address view but could not define it as I desired.

Secondly, what I really want to do is modify the 'contact editor' real estate layout, for easier data entry objectives stated. It is not evident to me if this functionality is available.

"Firstly I could not edit existing address, company or list views."

You can edit any existing address by a double click on the name (this brings up the editing template).

"Secondly ..."

You can change the size of the fields (is that what you mean?) Your requirements are not clear to me.

The Evolution manual can be accessed via Help, Contents.

Hi

If your response is referring to the contact editor, then I agree. That said it would seem that I have not made my requirements clear since I do not find what I want in the manual.

Entering data as is within the contact editor doesn't work for me. For example, if I scrap off a contact's name, title, company, address, phone and web site off an email, website, etc. I can't paste in a note section in the 'contact editor', in order to cut and paste the name in the name field, the title in the title field, etc. Additionally if Evolution had a note section in the contact editor, currently I have to cut and paste across the three tabs of contact, personal and mailing information. My request therefore was seeking capability to restructure or change the contact editor form. I might consolidate the tabs or at the very least I would put name, title, company, address, phone and note on the same tab form. It would seem that this is not possible in Evolution unless you can clear up the customization aspect of Evolution for me. Thanks

The answer to date doesn't solve my problem

As stated above, I'm still looking for options.

The only way that I can see that you can achieve what you want is to use an intermediate step such as Tomboy Notes (in Accessories) where you can paste "in toto" whatever you have copied and transfer the bits and pieces to the addressbook.

Click on the web page for Evolution (Help, About) and check out the plugins. You would know best what you are looking for.

Novell Inc may like to hear of your requirements and consider implementing them.

I know of no email programme that will do what you require.

I would agree, or similarly use a text editor.

I did but nada success with plugins

I welcome Novell's inquiry but it may be too late for reproducing what's in the Outlook email program; Tools, Forms, and Design Forms.

By the way, I've since up the ante seeking more than a PIM and I've been pleasantly surprised with SugarCRM (inclusive of a more robust contact, calendar, task, etc)

I had a look at SugarCRM and it looks like it might just be what you were looking for. You did not mention in the beginning that you wanted a personal information manager.

I am not in business and therefore find Evolution adequate for my requirements.

As to Outlook, you can run 2000 and 2003 in Wine in Ubuntu.....but I discarded Windows for a more enlightened computing experience years ago.

Good Luck Winnebie.
