View pictures inline by default?

Asked by Isny

How can I enable pictures to be shown inline by default? If I receive an e-mail with one or more pictures attached, it is annoying to have to go and open each picture individually.

Here is the help text copied from evolution on this.

=================
2.1.7.2. Inline Images in HTML Mail

When someone sends you HTML mail that includes an image in the body of the message (for example, the welcome message in your Inbox), Evolution displays the image inside the message. You can create messages like this by using the Insert Image tool in the message composer. Alternately, just drag an image into the message composition area.

Some images are links in a message, rather than being part of the message. Evolution can download those images from the Internet, but does not do so unless you request it. This is because remotely servered images can be slow to load and display, and can even be used by spammers to track who reads the email. Not automatically loading images helps protect your privacy.

To load the images for one message:
   1. Click View > Load Images.

To set the default action for loading images:
   1. Select Edit > Preferences, then select Mail Preferences.
   2. Click the HTML Mail tab.
   3. Select one of the items: Never Load Images Off the Net, Load Images in Mail From Contacts, or Always Load Images Off the Net.
   4. Click Close.

=================
Here, in the step 3 above, if you set "Always load images off the net", it should solve your problem.

It does not solve this problem. It is still same. It is really annoying to have to open inline each picture individually.

You do not need to load each image separately, however you do need to request images to load in any message which contains embedded images. Within the mail itself, go to "View", then "Load Images", this will load all embedded images within that mail.

This is the correct behavior, since most mails with embedded images are advertising and automatically loading images is very bad from a privacy/security perspective.

I don't see this as a problem, since it is a simple action you need to do on the few messages with embedded images... if anything, you might ask for an option such as "Always load images from DOMAIN.COM"... but always loading images from an unknown source, in a message which is often spam is very bad.

Additionally, to the two responders... @brdokoky and @Marek Durcek - Please read the original response again, it explains both how to do it on a per message basis, and also to set the default behaviour. I'm completely at a loss to know what problem you think is not solved.

Short answer: I don't think it can be done at the moment, but it is a requested feature.

@James Lewis: No, it really does NOT solve the problem. The reason is the solution yourself and the original response both assume that it's an HTML email. It's not.

Here's what's happening: You get a _plain text_ email with 10 GIF/JPG/PNG/image attachments from your friend/relative, with photos of a trip/holiday/new-born-baby/etc. You really do want to see these images. However, to see those 10 images you have to click "view inline" 10 times, on each and every attachment, and that gets very annoying very quickly (especially since counter-intuitively, the easiest way to open them is from the bottom upwards, otherwise you have to scroll after each and every click).

Changing the HTML mail setting to "Always load images off the net" makes no difference, since it's not an HTML mail. Going "View -> Load Images" also makes no difference, since it's not an image with a "<img src=" tag - rather, it's an attachment.

What I think the request was for (and I would like this too) is a way to say "view all inline attachments", and have them all visible at the end of the message. Either as a default preference, or as a button/menu item/hotkey, either would be an improvement.

Here are the gnome bug reports requesting both of these (first one is over 4.5 years old, next is over 1 year old).
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=271691 : Option to view all attachments inline
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=546997 : display inline attachments by default

Can you help with this problem?
