Password not recognized in email set up

Asked by Liz D.

I have windows xp and recently installed Ubuntu and particianed my computer. My interest was getting my mail account directed into Evolution. I have set it up but when I activate to connect with my other mailbox to download my mail, The programs stops and keeps telling me the password doesn't match. I don't know how to get by this one?

I am on Verison DSL with MSN as my mailbox. I don't use Verizons mailbox. I am wondering if that is the problem because it is trying to route through two programs? Maybe? I am new to Ubuntu and not computer savy. But can you tell me if anyone with Verison DSL with MSN ever could transfer their email to Evolution. Any suggestions on what to do?

I don't know that much about MSN (since i have been using Linux for the last 5-6 years) but if they provide a POP3 or LDAP it is fairly easy to set up. It should not matter what ISP (Internet Service Provider) you have nor if bouth evolution and MSN are running at the same time.

If you need further help please provide some more information about your email settings.

I'm not sure what information you need about my email settings. Do you mean evolutions settings? I am new to it and not sure what they might be. All I have done was filled out the panels and I don't get connected.

Today trying to download the email from Verison gave me this message:
"Error Sending Password: ERR {Auth} Suthentication failed"

Notice trying to send email:
"Unable to authenticate to SMTP server."
"Bad authentication response from server."

Does these notifications suggest where I might fix something?

Thank you again!

The Verizon site should have, in the help section, instructions on how to configure a generic mail client -- if you are lucky, even how to configure Evolution itself (but don't hold your breath). With these instructions, it is usually easier (er, not as difficult as before) to follow up with the Evolution setup panes (under Edit/Preferences/Mail accounts).

The errors on receiving suggest you are using the wrong authentication method at the Verizon POP server (perhaps you set it up for, say MD5, and they require PLAIN).

A similar error when sending: the Verizon SMTP server did not like whatever you set up for authentication.

Can you help with this problem?
