can't send mail at all

Could you please give a step-by-step explanation when this problem occurs. What do you exactly do?

It almost looks like you have configure the mail folder location to "/" or something like that, which is certainly creating a problem.

I bought the computer second hand so I'm not sure how anything is configured. However, to answer your question, when I open evolution, I get that message immediately. Any ideas?

Have you ever been able to use Evolution on this computer?
Is it a fresh install of Ubuntu?

Nope, never even realized my mail was going thru evolution so my outbox was full of mail that never went out! I tried re-running the install disk to see if maybe a pkg didn't install but had no luck. Version 7.0 is the one I believe is installed and was when I bought it.

I suspect that the email accounts set up in Evolution is misconfigured. Do you know what kind of email service you use?

If you have the necessary details given from your email service provider, you could verify these against your mail accounts list which is available on the following menu:

Edit -> Preferences, Mail Accounts
