shared e-mail address from 2 accounts

Asked by gudgeons

I have set up two user accounts on Ubuntu (Hardy), but they shared the same e-mail address. How do I configure, or start-up Evolution from either account so that it uses a shared or common inbox?

Hello

You can do it but it will be sort of a mixed inbox so its preferable to have separate folders with labels created Or add another account in evolution with the same email address and a different name

Regards

I think you mean create a second "inbox2" label ? But then how do I get that to link to the inbox on the other account ?

Or maybe I've misunderstood totally, in which case...being a newbe at Linux (I'm still learning about command line stuff), so how/what would I do ?

It depends a lot on whether the account is email account is IMAP or POP3.
If it's IMAP, everything stays on the server so you just login as either user and configure the account in Evolution, they would both be looking at the same inbox on the server.

If it's Pop3, you could choose to keep a copy of all email on the server and only download new ones.
This would mean that there would be two copies of each email stored locally.

I'd go for IMAP if it's available to you, since it's a very simple solution.

Gmail offers free IMAP and also can take email from more than one existing POP3 account if that interests you.

I am not quite sure as to what you are trying to achieve but if I read this correctly, I would go into Message (in Evolution) and set some parameters by going to "Create Rule" so that those emails which are addressed with a certain subject are sorted into a folder of your choice.

In my household, the various occupants have separate email addresses which makes it a whole lot simpler to configure Evolution so that everyone gets the email meant only for them. Most ISPs offer multiple mailboxes and the simplest answer would be to do just that.

I think I've found a solution that works for me.

While in the GUI (gnome) I made a link from the directory 'mail' under one account which I copied across to replace the mail directory in the /.evolution directory of the other accounts.
This seems to work OK.

Making a link to replace the whole of the '.evolution' directory didn't work.
Making individual links from directories/files lower down did work, but then you need to make more of them.

This, of course, assumes that all the directories/files involved have group r/w permissions.

So either account can send/receive e-mails with them saved in shared boxes.
