no sound notification receiving emails only a visual notification

there is no sound to alert me to a new email being received. there is only a visual icon which comes up to let me know there is a new email. everything else appears ok. I am sending and receiving emails without any problem. the sound on login is there and other sounds seem to all be working. it is only the sound on receiving emails that is the problem. any assistance is appreciated.

you use evolution? go to edit, settings, e-mail settings, notification on new emails
there the option should be.

thank you for your reply. the notification box is checked. perhaps it just means that I am being notified by a visual icon which comes up for a few seconds. I don't have any other sound problems.

thats strange
i can choose between a few options:
i can make it pep within a new arrival
 and i can make it play a audio file within a new arrival
do we talk both about evolution:)?

hi Jonas. I don't get the options. and yes it is evolution. I installed ubuntu 8.04 last week and it came with firefox webbrowser and the evoluntion email program. it looks like I will have to leave it as it is because there are no other options in the Edit & preferences. thanks for the trouble you have taken with this problem.

In Hardy Heron, open Evolution, click on Edit and then Plugins.

You can tick all the boxes under Enabled Plugin if you wish.

Click on the text part that says "Mail Notification" to activate the right hand screen, click on the Configuration tab and place a tick in the box next to "Play sound when new messages arrive".

You can also specify a sound file to be played. There is a test button so that you can check that it works.

evolution 2.24.1 on intrepid:

selecting the plug in, configuration tab, tick play sound, select /usr/share/sounds/any.wav, click play -> no sound.

Same on debian lenny, evolution 2.22.3.1.

In both cases I have ALSA working but pulseaudio not installed.

thank you Ferry Toth. I now have sound notification on receiving emails by following your instructions. I haven't had sound notification since I installed this system.
