text editing buttons not working

Asked by matt_fry

Using evolution in ubuntu 7.10, when composing/editing emails, the buttons for changing text font, bold, italic, etc are greyed out, and cannot be used.
only the left/centre/right justification buttons work.

have tried changing from preformat to normal etc, to no avail.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Matt

By default evolution creates new emails in plain text - because that is the system email was designed to use. Formatting with bold and underline and so on is only possible if you use HTML formatted messages. You can read about this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML_e-mail Usually HTML in emails is a bad idea, you can read about why in "Friends Don't E-Mail Friends HTML" (http://www.wired.com/techbiz/media/news/2001/02/41639) and "HTML IN E-MAIL: A BAD IDEA" (http://efn.no/html-bad.html)

To enable HTML for one message create the new message (or open a draft) and select 'Format > HTML". Now the formatting buttons are available. You can read about other options in the manual. You will find the relevant section in the manual by selecting 'Help > Contents' and reading the section called "Composing New E-Mail Messages".
