Gmail through Evolution

Asked by Roficimo

Binary package hint: evolution

Trying to set up Evolution mail client to import my gmail account. I've followed numerous manuals and guides but I keep getting this error message after setting up my account: Host lookup failed: stmp.gmail.com: Name or service not known - and it repeats it twice.

Only problem, I KNOW it is not stmp, but rather smtp - and I've checked it 100 times but that message keeps coming up. So where is it entered incorrectly. How can I set this right?

Thanks for your assistance.

if you open a command prompt and try

cat ~/.gconf/apps/evolution/mail/%gconf.xml

DO you see any references to "stmp"

Hello

You can set it right

First open up evolution

Then click on edit -> preferences

Then click on mail accounts and click on edit

Under the sending email tab server field should be smtp.gmail.com

Server type should be SMTP

Click on OK and try again

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

To Tony Mugan:

I did not see any "stmp" references, although there was one "smtp" reference. Is there anywhere further I might look?

To Bhavani:

I went through and set it up again, making careful keystrokes and re-reading and re-reading, and I'm positive I've entered "smtp.gmail.com" and the server type is SMTP. At least this time when I selected Send/Receive it requested my password. However, after I entered it, I received the same error message: "Host lookup failed: stmp.gmail.com: Name or service not known." What is to be done??

Odd.
I would recommend removing the configuration for your gmail account, close Evolution.
Open Evolution again and adding gmail account from scratch.

Removed, closed, opened and re-added. No go, same error message. Although, it is now importing my messages so they can be read in Evolution. Only I can't send out of Evolution. Help me, so confused.

No, wait, it's working, apparently the machines aren't cleverer than us. Thanks for all your help!

Well that is progress.
The fact that it is importing means it is actually talking to the gmail server.

Just for clarification, you are using
"smtp.gmail.com" for the Server setting under the "Sending Email" tab and
"imap.gmail.com" for the Server setting under the "Receiving Email" tab?

You could also try using Mozilla Thunderbird for email as an alternative.
It's under Applications, Add/Remove
and search for "Thunderbird".

GMail uses ports

Currently using Evolution 2.22.3.1
adding the correct port at the end of server info [Example: smtp.gmail.com:465 ]
and SSL seems to be the key to Gmail. this is similar to setting up comcast or yahoo using their assigned ports rather than the standard assigned port 25 or 110

My configuration works fine. you can try the way I have it setup..

Configure the client as follows

Incoming Mail
Server Type= POP

Configuration=
Server = pop.gmail.com:995

User name= <email address hidden>

Security

Use Secure Connection = SSL Encryption

Authentication Type = Password

Outgoing Sending Mail

Server Type = SMTP

Server Configuration=

smtp.gmail.com:465

Check the box= Server Requires Authentication

Security
Use Secure Connection = SSL encryption

Authentication
Type=Plain

username= yourname (note I do not have gmail.com at the end here, just user name)

If you are using COMCAST and your email is not working suddenly?
You might have recieved a bogus E-Mail from Comcast stating that your sending Spam.
Dont Panic... dont install their Crap Ware.. They are now blocking port 25, the standard SMTP outgoing mail port.
Change your smtp from port 25
smtp.comcast.net this will default to port 25
smtp.comcast.net:587 will change the port to 587.. the : is what changes the port...
If you have other email address that might be using this same defaulting port, (such as the compnay I work for) call your IT person, there should be a back up port such as 26, or 587...
Next Write Comcast a nasty letter about the declining service..........
I would suggest scanning your PC for infection frequently....
Comcast seems to be rounding up IP address in ranges, not individually, and blocking port 25?
