Using filters in Evolution 2.22.1

Asked by ChrisCS

I have set up Evolution for the first time to collect mail from two accounts. I have also created several new mail folders and filters to sort the mail into the various folders. For some reason that I do not understand none of the filters will work. Here is an example of what I did:

I created a mail folder called "Margaret" and then a filter called Margaret Filter which reads 'sender contains Margaret D <email address hidden> move to folder Margaret". I did similar things in creating other folders with filters along the same lines. When I ran Evolution for the first time everything went into the Inbox and wasn't filtered.

When I created the mail folders I selected "File/New/Mail Folder/ folder name/ on this computer" and got a series of mailboxes that were separate from the inbox. Thinking that this might have been the wrong thing to do I deleted them all and then re-created them inside the inbox but still the filters won't work. I have tried highlighting some of the emails that should go into a particular folder and clicking "Message/Apply Filters" but nothing happens. Is there something somewhere that I have missed?

I have never used Evolution before; I tried to use the Windows version but it gave so many incomprehensible error messages that I uninstalled it and never got to use it. As it seemed quite good on Ubuntu 8.04 I thought I would use it in preference to web mail. I have used Thunderbird on Windows but it had a nasty habit of suddenlt deleting mail both from my hard disc and the server desptie ticking the option to leave mail on the server, so I don't want to risk installing that on Ubuntu in case the same thing happens.

Can anyone suggest why my filters won't work? The seem correct to me.

If you are new to evolution, I would suggest you read

http://www.go-evolution.org/FAQ

They have a good section on filters.

Hi nglnx, thanks for the message. My problem appears to have been solved. I had downloaded a lot of messages and though that by clicking of "Apply Filters" the downloaded messages would be sorted but I was mistaken. Thanks for the link
