Can't get mail out. It just sits there

Asked by David L. Favin

I entered all the info into EVOLUTION, created a mail message to myself and clicked on SEND. The send window comes up and just sits there. Any suggestions as to what is going on?

In Evolution go to:-

Edit --> Preferences --> Mail Accounts --> Edit (button) --> Sending Email (tab).

Do you have "SMTP" as your server type?

Have you configured the "Server Configuration" section as per your ISP settings?

Alan Pope:

I appreciate your quick response to my plight. In answer to your
question YES, I do have SMTP as my type of server.
I have a hunch regarding the nature of my problem. My computer has
two partitions. One partition's operating system is WINDOW XP. I am
using a mail browser in there with a certain password. I assume
therefore the ISP expects to see that password. The second partion
has an OS of UBUNTU. When I configured EVOLUTION I gave it a
different password.
I think this is the mistake I made when configuring. Now my question is ,
How do I change the password in EVOLUTION?

I would appreciate an answer to that question.

Incidentally, your instruction movie on EVOLUTION is well done. The
only criticism I have is the print is just a bit small on the
provided window. It is not a serious problem for the information does
come across.

Regarding your question on how to change the password within Evolution,

During the setup, the password for your eMail account is never asked. However, when you connect to the mail server for the first time, you get a pop-up asking for the password to that eMail server.

If you never got this pop-up then you are having problems accessing the server; If the pop-up has showed once and you were not asked AGAIN for the password, this means that the password is correct, and your problem is something other than then authentication.

Support:

My problem is that I cannot connect to the server for the "first
time". When I try and send a test message the system just sits there
looking at me plain and simple. It goes nowhere.

I would be interested in starting all over again with the mail
setup process just to make sure things were entered AOK. Can you
suggest a method of e,imninating what had been entered and starting
the EVO<LUTION set up process again.

In Evolution go to Edit --> Preferences --> Mail accounts (on the left), choose the mail account and click Delete. Once deleted click Add to go through the setup wizard again.

I still do not understand the nature of my problem. I shall give you
all the information listed under EDIT in EVOLUTION

The SERVERs indicated above are currently what I am using in WINDOWS

When I try and send a test message to myself I get the following windows

                 SEND and RECEIVE MAIL

Evolution functioned okay so far. Fine programme!

But:
Then mail was not sent anymore because of my ISP closing port 25.
I changed everything to port 587 (in mail server - smtp_additional - and in evolution outgoing mail). This functioned for a while, but then everything stopped again - mail not sent away.

Via another machine (window xp - opera) the mail server funtions okay. Telnet to server + post 587 is also okay.
So I must have done something wrong in Evolution - but..what?????
