use Evolution to work with my MSN account

Asked by John Oppedisano

I switched from my dialup to DSL and now I cannot use Evolution to send email. The ISP will not allow email to be sent through another connection other than their dialup. I do not know all the info to fill in so I can coordinate my msn account with Evolution so I can send email from it.

To add: I am not sure of the server type and configuration. When I talked to someone on the phone for MSN they said they don't support Linux.

If I remember correctly, the MSN/Hotmail require you to pay money for POP/SMTP access. There are some workarounds but they tend to end up being a pain in the long run. I would recommend switching your email provider to Google Mail(gmail) as they provide almost 3gig of storage, free POP/SMTP access and they don't put advertisements at the bottom of your emails.

Here is the workaround for MSN/Hotmail

but I can't confirm it as I left MSN/Hotmail a long time ago and refuse to go back as I don't like their lock-in tactics.

If you choose to go with gmail, it is very easy to set up using any email client available(they don't try to lock you in as Microsoft does) and for evolution you can check the directions at this page.
