Evolution hangs when downloading after 15.04 upgrade.

Asked by glenpeck

When I open Evolution the email starts to download but gets "stuck" and cannot complete the download of all the emails. I have to reboot my computer repeatedly in order to get the remaining emails to download.

Prior to the 15.04 upgrade, Evolution was working perfectly.

What is the current status of your system?
Is the problem still there?
How does this "getting stuck" look like?
Can you end evolution when it is in this status, and start it again afterwards?
If not, can you try opening a terminal window and issue the command "killall evolution" and then restart evolution?

Hi Manfred. Thanks for responding. It's very much appreciated. I'm out of town, so please bear with me.
Yes, I'm still having the problem. What I mean by "getting stuck," is typically a mail download will start. I click on Send/Receive to monitor the progress of the downloads and I'll see (for example) 4 of 30. It stays on that seemingly indefinitely. I click Cancel, and there is no response and Cancel All... same thing. When I try to close Evolution, the screen looks like it's trying to close, but again stays like that. I can't log out of my session, I can only restart or shut down. When I restart my computer I can start Evolution again. Sometimes, the downloads will complete, and sometimes it takes two or three reboots to get my mail to finish downloading. I've not tried the terminal commands. I'll do that though the next time I have the issue, and I'll let you know the result. I appreciate the suggestion.
Thanks,
Glen

Hi Manfred,
I started Evolution this morning to check my mail. Like before, it got "stuck" on 2 of 7. I opened a terminal as you suggested and typed in sudo killall evolution. Evolution attempted to close (program grayed out) but was seemingly unable to close. So I typed sudo killall evolution again. This time Evolution immediately closed. I then clicked on the Evolution icon in my launcher and Evolution opened and downloaded my mail in a normal way with no issues.

I hope this helps. Again, I appreciate your help.
Glen

So it seems that "killall evolution" can serve as a workaround when the downloading gets stuck.
I am sorry to say, but I do not have a clue what the root cause of your problem might be.

I understand. It's very difficult to pinpoint these things when they are intermittent like mine is.

Do you know if there are common files between Cheese and Evolution? I'm having issues with Cheese as well, but don't know if there could be a connection?

If you're ok with seeing if there might be some files common to both Cheese and Evolution, maybe that might help. I don't know anything about programming though or getting into the nuts and bolts of various programs so I'm just trying anything at this point. If you feel that wouldn't be fruitful, believe me I understand and appreciate your efforts anyway. The killall is a good workaround, and I appreciate the suggestion. I used it again this morning.

If I hear from you again, great. If not, thank you, I appreciate your efforts and input.

Best regards,
Glen
