Cannot create memo in evolution

When I go to the Memos pane in Evo 2.12.1 on gutsy, I cannot create a new memo. On the left pane, under "On this computer," the check box for the "Personal" memos is not checked and will not allow me to check it. All attempts to create a new memo fails. I assume there is something wrong with my Evo setup, but I don't know what. A missing folder in the evo tree perhaps? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello JDM

To create a new memo entry:

   1.Click File > New > Memo.
   2.Select a group in which you would create a memo entry.
   3. Type a category in the Categories field.To show or hide Categories field, click View > Categories.
   4.Type text for the memo in the Summary field.
   5.In the Start Date field, type the date this reminder note should appear in the recipients’ Calendars.
   6.Type text for the memo in the Memo Content field.
   7. To add an attachment to the memo, drag and drop the attachment into the attachment bar.or Click the Attach button on the toolbar, then browse to the attachment.
   8. Click Options > Classifications, then select a classification (as Public, Private or Confidential) for the memo.
