why is my evolution system saying it is trying to save to mbox?

Asked by rimlin

when I send an email I now get a message saying that the "save" to mbox has failed and my email will be saved to my normal send folder. As far as I am aware I have not made any changes (apart from authorised updates) so what is mbox and why is my system trying to save there?

I am using ubunto 11.10

mbox is the format/specification for storing mail messages locally:
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/oneiric/man5/mbox.5.html

I note from this document that it uses $LOGNAME to specify the location of the files. There was also a bug in 11.10 where $LOGNAME was null, (ie blank) and this caused some problems for people: bug #875705

This bug has now been fixed and the fix released: I can confirm that a new install of 11.10 gets updated so that $LOGNAME is the user's login name. I'm guessing here, but perhaps having the fix dumped on your system has upset evolution which was probably configured when $LOGNAME was null. Perhaps someone who knows the nuts and bolts of evolution can suggest an easy fix for you.
