I am running 10.4 and find that evolution sometimes will not accept password.

Asked by bccynic

My Evolution mail is working fine, lets me in with my saved password, then later when I try to retrieve mail it tells me to enter password, and refuses to accept the password.

Reinstalled using Synaptic, no change. It now does not even occasionally let me in. If i can't soon get in I will start losing mail, because this is my main mail download computer and is set to remove from server after five days.
Recreated account and made the new one the default, but still no luck. I can go into Windows but hate to do that. Trying to get away completely from and windows depenancy.

i have made some changes with my server, but what is now happening is that when I try to download messages, the password box pops up, I cancel it and the email does download. Why does the password box pop up whether or not I put the password in and if I do put it in, it pops up again and again, but if I exit out the messages download. At this time Thunderbird appears to be working, but I switched to Evolution because of earlier problems with Thunderbird.

Are you using POP or IMAP.

I believe you are using POP, and the reason behind this is as follows: In POP if another mail client is connected all other requests will fail, POP is a single connection protocol - therefore IMAP will resolve this issue (or only use 1 device for POP.

This solved / explained my problem. Unfortunately my provider (Telus) gives me such a small amount of staorage space for my email, under imap I bulk out at about three days, and I'm not a big user. So I have switched back to POP, but can have only one device on email at a time. Now that I understand, it is simply an annoyance, but not a worry.
Thank you very much Matt.
