Cannot set Evolution as the default mail client in Oneiric

Asked by Alexander Winizki

I had Ubuntu 11.04 on my Laptop and then have done a clean install of 11.10 preserving the home partition.
In Oneiric, i want to use Evolution as the default mail client. I have installed Evolution from the software centre. Then I started Evolution and have, according to the appearing advice, ported my existing mailbox/accounts to the new format. Evolution as such works fine. Now, when I click the envelope icon in the panel, I want to see an entry which starts Evolution.

[sorry, must have accidentally hit the Send button]

In the system settings, I have selected "System information", then "Default Applications". I selected Evolution as the default mail and calendar application. This settings are remembered correctly, but, at least as mail is concerned, have no effect. When I click the envelope icon in the panel, it still shows an entry that starts Thunderbird, but not Evolution. Clicking this entry indeed starts Thunderbird.

Ran into the same problem. Here's what I did. I ran Synaptic Package Manager (you may have to install it first), then selected and installed the following packages:

evolution-indicator
mail-notification-evolution
mail-notification

I also uninstalled Thunderbird. That allowed "Evoution" to appear in the mail icon menu (and launch from there), and it also allows Evolution to launch from the Unity panel. Hope that helps.

Thank you. For me it was enough to install evolution-indicator. mail-notification-evolution and mail-notification are not installed on my system, but Evolution is now displayed in the Envelope menu on the panel and I also get notifications about incoming mail. But another question arises: why is evolution-indicator not installed automatically when the user installs Evolution via the Software centre?

I think someone already filed a bug on that. Makes you feel a little like "jailbreaking" Ubuntu, huh? :)
