I am not sure what you mean. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) The Evolution version currently is 2.28.3. I have installed programs using terminal but on a very limited basis.

Thanks for your help. I have a question to ask before I do any damage to my operating system.

Do I enter this all as one command line or does it have to be broken up into several several lines? Would you please clarify.

Just as one line. Copy as it's given and run it. You could run a data backup so your current setup is saved

Sorry for the late reply. I haven't tried your idea yet. I am saving for a new hard drive to back up everything first. Thank you for your help and will attempt the operation soon. I am anxious to stop using Thunderbird, back to Evolution. Thanks again.

I would like to do exactly the same thing -- upgrade to a later version of Evolution. Is it possible?
(Edward Parker, did you try?)

Current situation:

AMD64 machine
Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)
evolution 2.28.3

actionparsnip: What is your suggested command doing?
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jacob/evo230 && sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

By the way, Evolution 2.28.3 is what I see in Ubuntu's Synaptic Package Manager. Specifically,
2.28.3-0ubuntu10.3 is the installed version, which is identical to the listing for latest version.

I have backed up my entire .evolution folder (2.3 GB).

PS: Judging from this,
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution

can one go higher than evolution 2.28.3 in Ubuntu 10.04?

No Sir I never did try. I was afraid to loose some important email and still don't have a backup hard drive. I have only been using Linux/Ubuntu for a few years now and I am not that experienced with using the Terminal. I have been waiting for the new Ubuntu LTS. But rom what I have been hearing so far. I may have to keep 10.40 for a while longer. If so I will be buying a new hard drive ASAP and following Actionparsnips advice. Good luck what ever you try.

Newer evolutions need Gnome3 which is notpart of Lucid. You can upgrade to Precise in April (LTS to LTS upgrades are fully supported) and you can get Evolution 3.2.3

Can you help with this problem?
