evolution birthdays

When I try to enter a birthday in Evolution calendar I get " birthdays are read only" . So how do I enter a birthday please ?

I have read this link but even if I change to "Personal" I get a pop up window and enter the details then I get " birthdays and anniversaries are read only" and it refuses to save.

Its surprising if you mess about long enough you come up with a solution .
