15 sec delay during mail fetch with evolution

Asked by Frank W

Hey,

I'm using Evolution 2.30.3 on Ubuntu 10.10 (German version)
If I fetch mails from server the window with status bars pops up and I have to wait around 15 seconds until the status bars going on.
I'm using POP3 mail acoounts. Other email clients fetch immediately. Any hints?

Frank

How is your networking configured to the system?

My system is connected with a router (Fritzbox) and the router is connected to internet via DSL. No WLAN (all wired with cable).

I'm using an ethernet card, multicast on, MTU 1500, DHCP activated.

All network settings are untouched standard settings from Ubuntu installation.

Do you need more special information?

That's fine. If you run:

gksudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf

delete ALL the text (the file will be regenerated on reboot so is ok) and add these 2 lines:

nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

Save the new file and close gedit, retry the email / web access. Is it better?

Yes, much better, with these entries there is no delay. So if I understand right it is a DNS problem. I just wonder why it occours only with evolution mail (at least with such a long delay).

Yes, your ISP's DNS sucks. You will need to apply the setting in network manager for it to survivie each reboot. Click network manager and select Edit Connections. Select your connection and click Edit. Under IPv4 settings change the interface from DHCP to DHCP (address only). In the DNS servers box type:

8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

Select to apply system wide and ok / apply back out (you will need to type your password for authentication). Once back, disable the wired connection, then re-enable it and wait for the connection to re-form. You can now run:

cat /etc/resolv.conf

and you should see the settings have been applied by network manager :).

You should reboot to double test too :).

I would tell your provider as well.
