Open a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T or Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and run this command:

lsb_release -a; echo; apt-cache policy evolution; echo; evolution; echo DONE

If that command is split into two lines in your email, you'll have to copy it from https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+question/166118 instead.

This will provide some important information, and also attempt to run evolution in such a way that it may write messages to the command-line, which might shed light on what is going wrong.

Please reply, describing what happens when you do this (does Evolution appear and then disappear, like before?). Please also select all the text in the Terminal window (Edit > Select All), copy it to the clipboard (Edit > Copy), and paste it here.

Please also try running evolution in a different user account, and report whether or not this problems occurs. If you only have one user account on your Ubuntu system, you can create a second one to test this.

(1) That is very unusual output for the command I asked you to run. It seems that at least part of the command was not run (or had no effect). Can you please select *all* the text in the Terminal (Edit > Select All), copy it to the clipboard (Edit > Copy), and paste it here, as I requested?

(2) What happens when you run Evolution in a different user account?

If you still want help getting Evolution working (whether or not you are now using Thunderbird as your primary email application), please create a new user account and see what happens when you run Evolution in the new user account. If it works, that will show that the problem is being triggered by something in your configuration/profile; if the same error occurs, that will show that the problem is being triggered by something else.

If you no longer want help getting Evolution working, please mark this question as Solved. (You can do that at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+question/166118.) If you change your mind later, you can always reopen the question later.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Gerhard Kölbel for more information if necessary.
