I need help, fast. I am using Evolution Email. It is automatically blocking stuff for me. and I can't figure out why or how to stop it. It is letting all of the JUNK mail get into my box, but the mail I want, like emails from my brother who os over seas, it is blocking those. Please help me.

Hi,
In evolution go to edit -> preferences in the menu bar. Then choose "Mail Preferences" on the left hand side, then choose Junk, untick the box that says "check incoming mail for junk"

Hi, Gloria-

Evolution's email using something called a Bayesian filter to figure out and/or learn what you consider Junk. Here is an article on Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia that explains what Bayesian filtering is : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_filtering.

Generally, in Evolution, you teach the Junk filter by clicking on the Junk button when you read a message. That will place the message in the Junk folder in Evolution and it will use those messages to help automatically figure out what you might think is Junk in the future.

The good news is that those messages that it "blocks" are probably in the Junk folder in Evolution if indeed that is what happened. Take a look and you just might find them there.

I hope this helps clear things up a bit.

Good luck.

Jim

Hello Jim -

what has me so upset is that i have turned off all the JUNK filters,
that I can find, and two weeks later, I can't get email from my brother
in Wales. He is getting a message saying I have blocked him.

I HAVE NOT. I have not told the computer his emails were junk. I don't
know why this is happening. I can not receive emails from the people I
want and the JUNK emails are getting through. This morning I had 25
emails. all but 3 were JUNK.

I'm lost and confused and just about ready to cry. Where in the system
does it store the information about who is BLOCKED from receiving
emails? Maybe I need to go in there and take my brother off that list.

Please advise.

In my limited experience with evolution the 'junk' classifier just doesn't work too well.

To turn off Junk filtering see edit -> preferences, then mail preferences -> junk. and make sure the two boxes are unchecked.

Also check that edit -> mail filters doesn't show any filters enabled.

However I don't think this is an evolution problem - evolution shouldn't be sending a message saying that your brother is blocked, this almost sounds like it could be something to do with a fault with your email provider. Perhaps getting your brother to paste the "rejection" email here would help confirm.

Hi, Gloria-

I know this is upsetting, but we'll work it out.

With the additional details that you have provided, I would have to agree with Mr. Sas that this is probably not an Evolution problem and is more likely an issue with your ISP (or email provider if they are indeed different).

I wonder if there might be blocking settings that you can access from your ISP's web interface to your email account.

If you could get your brother to forward the error message by either posting it here or sending it to my email account (<email address hidden>), it would probably give more clues as to what is happening.

If he could forward it with all the email headers that would be even better, as then we could track where the problem is actually taking place. He might have to look in the Help of his email application to figure out how to do it, but it would be worth it. If he is using a web-based package like Yahoo Mail, you can usually turn on full headers in the Options or Settings area of the account.

Hang in there.

Jim
