Do other internet programs work?

Try opening up a command prompt (applications->accessories->terminal) and typing "ping google.com". After waiting a few seconds you should get writing on the screen like:

"dean@bells:~$ ping google.com
PING google.com (64.233.167.99) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=234 time=115 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=2 ttl=234 time=111 ms"

Let me know whether or not you get information which looks like this.

Thanks for all your help. every thing seems to be working normal other than firefox. Cannot get it to recognise
the DSL server, tried everything they asked for. Using Qwest Dsl on msn.com, but neither wants to help with linux OS`s. This old man, 80 years, just enjoys trying to learn new ways. Thanks again

Everything seems to be working fine now. Using Gmail and Opera. Still trying to get Firefox and Thunderbird to work. Using Qest DSL with MSN.com, neither are of any help when using Ubuntu. But this old fart< 80 years old> will keep trying. I am always willing to learn but forgetful at times. I do part time work for NRAO, and they use nothing but Linux. Thnks again.....Have a nice day.

I'm not familiar with Qest DSL, but they might have a proxy server... see if you can find the proxy settings in Opera, then copy them into Firefox. Or, try "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network" in Firefox (under Preferences -> Connection Settings).

Can you help with this problem?
