Unable to connect to mail server

Asked by Peter Ireland

I have just installed an email server on one of my Windows network computers and am having troubles accessing the mailboxes using Evolution. Due to Antivirus conflicts, I am having to use port 8025 for the SMPT server and 8110 for the POP server. I was apparently successful in designating these as 192.168.1.1:8025 and 192.168.1.1:8110 in Evolution's server address field. I have configured both Windows Firewall as well as my router to open these ports to permit access.

I need to enter a password in Evolution for mailbox access and to do that, I apparently need to Click on the "Check for Supported Types" button. When I do, the "checking" window flashes for a brief second before the process quits, leaving me unable to specify a password. I suspect that it may be a Ubuntu port or security issue perhaps but I am new to the operating system and unfamiliar with what I might need to do here.

Any assistance here would be much appreaciated, thanks.

Peter

You don't enter the password at that point, only choose the login method. The password is actually entered when you first attempt to access the server. So when you first retrieve mail and when you first send mail. Does it work fine if you complete the wizard and then try to retrieve/send mail?

Thanks for the reply Joel,

I got one shot at it and I guess I didn't enter the correct password when prompted. It aborted the login and has not prompted me again for password since then.

Aha! I find that although I am no longer prompted for password during configuration, I AM prompted when I check for mail. The problem has now been resolved and thank you for your assistance!
