Evolution mail stopped working

Asked by Pete Loignon

After much trouble setting up hotmail (@live.com) to work with evolution it finally worked great. Several months have gone by with no further problems. A few days ago (after an update...Coincidental?) mail stopped working altogether. No receive, no send. Error states "cannot connect to server" No settings have been changed.
current settings are as follow:
Usr name: <email address hidden>
Receive: pop3.live.com:995
               ssl
               password

Send: smtp.live.com:587
          tsl
          plain
Any ideas?

Make sure you are not running Evolution in Offline Mode.

If that isn't it, does your internet connection work. Please copy and paste this command after the $ and run it in a terminal then copy and paste back the output:

$ ping -c 20 pop3.live.com

This may take a while. Relax with some green tea while you wait.

HTH's,

pete@pete-Aspire-5517:~$ ping -c 20 pop3.live.com
PING pop3.hot.glbdns.microsoft.com (65.54.62.215) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- pop3.hot.glbdns.microsoft.com ping statistics ---
20 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 19017ms

This is the result.
By the way, in evolution, my password is not requested as it used to be.
Thanks

Ok, you are not getting through according to that output (or your blocking them in a firewall/router).
Lets see if pings are blocked. Copy and paste this into a terminal like above, and then copy and paste the output back here please:

$ ping -c 5 8.8.8.8

Now if this works, then you can ping ok. And you have no connection to pop3.live.com for some reason.

So, I would look at your router and ISP to determine what this is about. Most cases a simple reboot of the router may fix it, in other cases it may be more intense to find the solution.
So, lets try rebooting the router. From there I'd check with your ISP to see if there are issues connecting to your email service.

I can connect to my email via the Internet

Ok, pinging isn't a issue. Is this solved?

If not, try that command again we tried earlier:

$ ping -c 20 pop3.live.com
