emails list is out of sync with preview and opened emails

help!
My list of emails viewed by From: Subject: Date: is out of sync with both the preview and opened emails
This only effect emails in the main Inbox and extra folders are still ok.
This happened before mid 2010 and I ended up deleting all emails in frustration. I have important emails i need to refer to again and cannot afford to do this again..

help would be much apprecitated..
I'm running Ubuntu 8.4 on a Dell Insprion mini
..not all that impressed really though I have to admit I've not had the time or skills to really get into it - a pity really as really into philosophy!

We may need to try a few things -- do you know if you are using POP or IMAP?

Try this for a start:
1) Move all email out of the inbox into a new folder, run the "expunge" menu item on your inbox, then move the mails back

Thanks so much, all back in order as far as I can see though there are most, if not all, my junk back but I can live with that!
