Evolution not download messages...

Asked by bccynic

Replaced Thunderbird when it stopped downloading mial, now after some time with Evolution, it will send but will not download messages except ftom Linux. Messages are on server and I have not changed settings

Evolution was working until one day I could not access the send and receive as it was greyed out. This was solved thankfully, I had accidentally checked work offline.
The only mail that has gotten through except Linux news. I have checked my POP settings and they seem correct. The mail is on the server, but I can't download them.

What happens when you hit send/recieve? What does the dialogue output?

Who is your provider

When I hit send receive the normal thing happens the download bar shows, but no messages other than the standard LINUX messages arrive. When I send it works fine. When I go to the provider webmail site there are new messages waiting but I have not received anything in Evolution since 19 November, except Linux subscriber messages.
My provider is Shaw Cable, and the POP settings are <shawmail.no.shawcable.net>

Checked with provider and all seems good at their end, including test messages and all settings correct, removed and re installed account. Thunderbird works in Windows but neither Thunderbird nor Evolution works in my linux.

I have the newest version of Thunderbird, and it won't work, except in Windows, Evolution still does not work are there any other email programs with most or all of the facilities provided by either of these programs that are recommended. I don't want to lose all of my mail and addresses all over again so I would like something that I can at least import addresses into, and incidentally I am not sufficiently computer literate to find where these programs store the mail and addresses so that I can save them to a CD, DVD, or memory stick.

The only real problem I've had with any version of Linux is that eventually the mail program crashes, and such things as address book and other important information has to be completely rebuilt. Any time I have tried to save the address book it comes out unreadable, and I lose unread messages.

Evolution downloads only mail from UBUNTU forums and advertising from my provider. There is mail on the server when I check webmail, but nothing I have done will enable downloading any other emails. I have checked with the provider, and even test emails from the technician will not get through. All settings are correct.
I do the regular updates but nothing has changed. This has been ongoing since 19 November. Half of all computer use is for email. I can get mail on my netbook windows XP Outlook Express, with exactly the same settings. I have read in the FAQs that others have experienced a similar problem.

I have discovered something that I do not recognise, when Evolution is searching for mail it says scanning IMAP server shawmail.cg.shawcable.net. I do not recognise the IMAP protocol. Is it a normal protocol?

IMAP is not the correct protocol, but it still does not work even when switched back to POP.

Linux will not allow me to remove Evolution, in hopes of trying a re-install.

This is frustrating. Mail on the server, excluding that of the provider, and Linux Forums is blocked from downloading onto my computer.

Do I have to un-install and re-install LInux, or how can I update Evolution, which I have downloaded.

Completely uninstalled email programs. Rebooted computer. Re-installed Evolution, which just came back as it was before. Clicked send/receive and got message at bottom right of the screen "Error while fetching mail"

I may be missing something very basic, but I can get my mail by going onto the server, or by going into Windows XP Outlook Express, or in XP using Thunderbird but I cant make Thunderbird or Evolution work in UBUNTU, even in the updated 10.10. I have checked with the provider and everything works from their end the only common problem is UBUNTU. Having checked the questions on the site, it seems that I am not the only one who can't download incoming mail. Is it in fact a bug?
It is pretty desperate when one has to resort to Windows for anything like email. Can anyone help?

When I click on send receive, the message comes up 179 messages to download then repeats sending just one that I have received, the last one for the seventh or eighth time.

Last night I burned and ran an iso disc of PCLINUXOS 2010 and it not only picked up my email settings that are not working in UBUNTU Evolution, but it downloaded everything off of the server that I could not previously get from UBUNTU. The problem must be with either the OS or the Mail program.

I suggest you take screenshots of the settings to compare in ubuntu.

I have finally got my mail working, having overwritten UBUNTU with PCLINUX, burning a new version of UBUNTU (10.10) and installing completely anew. Very time consuming and frustrating, but I am back in UBUNTU which I have found to be more friendly than the updated version of the system I used some time ago (pclinux).
I am still convinced that there was a bug, because my settings are the same as they were before and the same as I successfully uded in XP and pclinux.
