Unable to retrieve messages from Inbox.

Am simply getting error message:

 "No message satisfies your search criteria. Either clear search with Search->Clear item menu or change it"

Thank you for your kind input, Lt Worf; my evolution system was, it seems, jammed by a problematic e-mail, which has been safely extracted and disposed.

I have this same error message and can't display any in box items.

The clear search/clear is grayed out and nothing shows in the search field anyway.

How did you find this e-mail and dispose of it?

I may be of no use here, Bob.
I didn't have the greyed-out search area. I fortunately had a fairly clear in-box, and it was easy to identify the rogue e-mail. I am not sure how I cleared it, I seemed to open and delete it in rapid sequence out of frustration, and instead of jamming the system up, it actually went!
