Yahoo is a web mail service. They must explicitly allow their pop and smtp service for general use .Only then you can use a mail client like Evolution.
Googles Gmail service allows pop and smtp access. Please consult their home page for more info

I believe Yahoo stopped providing free POP mail access 3-4 years ago.

nope yahoo still are providing pop3 & smtp access all you need to enter is pop.mail.yahoo.com or where ever you are i.e mines pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk and smtp.mail.yahoo.and the same for pop3 i.e mines smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk it's just your yahoo id for the username and the yahoo password for your password and the smtp needs actherstion to be sent, your yahoo id aswell as the password hope that helps

I think your problem is that you've not entered the correct port number.

In my case, I've had to enter the following in the "send email"-options of my account settings in Evolution:
smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk:587

I've tried reporting to Evolution that it were better to have a separate field to enter the port number (i.e. 587), but I was unable to get my message on the right place.
