Unable to receive mail

Asked by Joel Stein

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10. I've gone through the system with my ISP but am still unable to receive email. Everything on the set up wizard seems to be fine. Help.

No on the IMAP. I use the POP protocol. I have both a trash folder and an
Inbox folder.

Please don't post with previous message included. Go to web site to see consequences.
Who is your provider, what are preferences set for reading mail (except password!) ?

My provider is mail.tidewater.net. I have no encryption set up and a login for authentication. Not a lot of choices to make on that wizard.

I also checked the "check every 5 minutes" - "leave messages on server" - and "delete after 15 days". Shouldn't be anything there to gum up the works.

Go to Edit->Preferences and select account and then Modify.
Check parameters are like described in:
     http://www.tidewater.net/faq/#3
for the two reading mail sections.

Done. The only thing that is different is "Full name" at the start. I wasn't sure what to put in since this is a second account, so I put in my first name. Could that be wrong?

Check your POP and SMTP ports also...

I'm sorry. I don't know how to do that. It's been years since I've set up a computer from scratch. Shouldn't the OS detect the correct port?

No, a port is an address of a connection.
The value of ports to used should be provided by http://www.tidewater.net/faq/#3

As I have currently issue with Evolution, I switched to Thunderbird.
And Thunderbird is able to do automatic configuration with a wide list of providers.
To install Thunderbird, System->Administration->Packet Manager. In small window enter thunderbird. The packet should appear. Install it, after you will find it in Applications->Internet->Thunderbird (the icon is blue).

Thanks delance, for all the help. I finally did just what you did. removed evolution and installed thunderbird. It instantly read all my settings and in 60 seconds I was ready to roll. Obviously there is some bug in the evolution program.
Thanks again.
