"Lost" all my e-mail - using evolution

Asked by le_phare

Running Ubuntu 10:10
Using evolution for e-mail

Evolution has worked ok up to this day. I don't know what has happen but now all my folders are empty. Only 3 e-mail left which I got this afternoon. It seems that all the folders in the folder .evolution and their contents are intact. What should I do to rectify this so I can read the saved e-mails.

All Contacts are as before, not lost anything here no error.
-----
All the folders except one are empty; Total messages 0
The folder for sent messages is ok.
I have difficult to believe that I have deleted all my mails.
Going to my HOME folder Name/../.evolution -it looks like the data is intact. The folder Name/../.evolution/mail has 2237 listings and the size is 188.5 MB.

An other solution:

I have a laptop with Vista OS
I use this one only for extra backup of my e-mails.
Here I have a .pst file which I can try to put into evolution program if it is possible ...

My solution was:
In windows XP
Installed Mozella Tunderbird imported from Outlook
From Tunderbird I copied the Personal folders to Evolution and then I had all my folders correct in Evolution.
:-) (-:
(unfortunately does Tunderbird work very slowly on my Computer - Evelution is fine!)

So you still have all your emails in the folders, but they don't appear in Evolution, right ?

Here is what I would do:
-copy paste the Evolution folder by security
-check in the trash if you didn't accidentaly deleted them (you probably checked already, but who knows?)
-right click on a folder, and check in the properties if the number of emails is right
-if it's right, you should try to check if the antispam filter is active. If it is, try to deactivate it to see if it improves things, I had this problem and it solved it.

Can you check in .evolution if all your emails are really there?
Check in the /mail folder, then depends what you have set. Check the files' size, it should be significantly big if all your emails are actually there.

Could you copy paste the folder for security reasons.
Then open the real one, open any folder you want (just one for test maybe, no need to do that on all of them), delete the files including "index" in their name. Then start Evolution and check if you see more emails in this folder? THe indexes should be recreated automatically by Evolution.

Done. Sorry the same result:
I did it on several levels as seen below

Name/.evolution/mail/local
Name/.evolution/mail/local/Personal folders.sbd
Name/.evolution/mail/local/Personal folders.sbd/inboks.sbd
Name/.evolution/mail/local/Personal folders.sbd/inboks.sbd/Bank.sbd
the files named *.index.* were recreated automatically by Evolution as
you said.

Good if you found a solution.
Remember to do backups of your emails ;) If you don't use IMAP yet, you should consider it if it's possible.

have fun !
