how to open outlook express files dbx

outlook express files have dbx extensions. I'm trying to access these files but I don't know which software to use as I am unable to open to extract email addresses and address book from windows based hard drive that has died

My girlfriend had the same problem. If you still have access to a windows system the solution is simple:
 - Make outlook work with your dbx files, and
 - then install the thunderbird there. One of the first things thunderbird will ask is if it should convert the emails from outlook into its own format (which happens to be the mbox format evolution and the other programs are using, too.
