Word documents are in code

Cannot read Word/Excel documents that are emailed to me, it comes out in a code that I cannot read even when asking to open with Gedit.
 I am running Ubuntu 10.4 & Windows 7 on a Dell Latitude D360.
 I would like some clear instructions ( I am aTOTAL NEWBIE to Ubuntu ) as to how to resolve this issue.

Can you open this documents using your installed Windows 7 MS Office Suite? Are you sure this files are not corrupted as you can easily handle this type of files using OO.

Hi Ian
Thanks for the speedy response.
I opened the documents on my work Pc. which is running Office 2003 and had no problems , I then emailed them to my personal Pc and could not read them after opening and saving.

Open Office on Ubuntu should open it without any problems.

Hi All
The OO word processor asks me how should it open it and it highlights "Unicode 8", I have tried several other codes but to no avail. The document informs me that it is in "MIMI" format.

Hi All
I seem to have resolved it by opening with the following methodology: Click on attachment and choose" view on line" scroll to it and click on "Open with Spreadsheet" . this does the trick.
