Can't connect to a public proxy server

Asked by kenneth

Hi

Just installed Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and am struggling to connect to a public proxy server.
I've been using Windows XP with a connection to this a public proxy server.
No authentication or passwords have been neccessary.
In the network monitor it shows incoming bytes and packets but no outgoing ones.
When i try to connect using Firefox an error message comes up saying
"Proxy server refusing connection"

I have set the connection properties in Firefox as well as for the Ethernet adaptor.

Please help
Kind Regards

Kenneth

Hi Kenneth,

what type of proxy are you using? - SOCKS or HTTP? can you share what you're using for your settings (perhaps just mangling the hostnames so that you don't have security issues?)

Thanks!!

Hello Krash

  Thankyou for your interest.

I assume the server is HTTP, i don't know much about these systems.
The connection required no authentication or anything of the sort with Windows XP.
I simply connect to the following address "proxy.tut.ac.za" with port 8080.
I'm afraid i don't know the significance of these.
My computer's IP address should be automatic, but I am unsure of where to set this in Ubuntu.

  Thanks for your time

  Kenneth

Can you try to open a terminal window (Ubuntu Menu -> Accessories -> Terminal)
and paste in the output from the following commands:

ifconfig

telnet proxy.tut.ac.za 8080

and the line (if any) that says

and the line from 'netstat -rn' that starts with 0.0.0.0

Thanks!

Hello again

I couldn't try those commands as the terminal refused my password.

In Ubuntu 6.06 LTS many things just started malfunctioning.
I couldn't mount a flash disk, read a cd or any other removable media.
Many applications stopped responding or just refused to execute.
Hadware such as the network adaptor, sound card and such were nowhere to be found.

I had no idea how to reset the system to defaults, so i tried installing Ubuntu 7.07
and now everything works!
I'm writing this e-mail through Ubuntu.

Thank you for all your help.

Kenneth
