Evolution cannot send emails to GMail via SMTP, recieving by POP and IMAP both fine

Asked by Brian Z

I'm running Evolution 2.8.3 in Ubuntu 10.04. I can't send outgoing messages through SMTP at all, although I can receive them fine, whether via POP or IMAP. I followed the instructions on Ubuntu Documentation to set up my account (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingGmailWithEvolution) and have also tried various alternative settings suggested in this and other forums.

When I try to send and receive emails, an error message like this one pops up:

==
Error while Sending message.

MAIL FROM command failed: Authentication Required. Learn more at
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=14257 r12sm11912713ibi.2
==

The URL changes every time even with the same settings, but its always a dead link. I posted a bug report about these unhelpful error messages, but I think that's probably a separate issue from why I can't send emails.

Try to open the 587 port in Evolution Preferences: Sending Email > Server Configuration > Server: smtp.gmail.com:587

Thanks Pako. I already tried smtp.gmail.com:587, and also port 465 (with SSL instead of TLS) but it makes no difference.

My preferences are settled the same as guide above and works fine.

I've checked and rechecked the settings, so I'm really not sure what to try next. I'm able to Telnet the smtp server on port 25. I got the link from the error message to work but the suggestions on there didn't help either.

Thanks Marco... I'm not sure I see any relevant information in those links that isn't already covered by the one I posted from Ubuntu Documentation? If I am missing something specific that might address my problem, please point it out.

The sent links are only to review your settings... especially to the Authentication step.

Hello,

Authentication is required so is SSL encryption. If you use IMAP you have to set this up on your Google Account.

This works for me.

Regards,

Allan :)

Thanks Allan... I have those settings all right. IMAP works fine, it's just the outgoing SMTP that is giving me the error and not sending my mail, but those settings are all right. There must be some kind of conflict or problem with my ISP or something but I have no idea how to proceed and fix this.

OK, my problem seems to be solved. First, I don't know if this is related, but shortly before I got Evolution working, I installed Thunderbird and that worked fine. But the Spanish instructions that inye (¡mil gracias!) posted a link to differs from the official documentation in that "@gmail.com" is left out of the login. That might be the critical problem and I will report it as a bug on there.

After I did a system update; I was not able to send email through Evolution, with an AOL account. So I made the port setting change, restarted Evolution, still did not work until I used smtp.aol.com:587, restart Evolution and all has worked so far.
