Hotmail authentication in Evolution 2.28.3

Asked by Guy Andrew

Can't set up Evolution 2.28.3 to use my hotmail account. I have set "receiving email" to pop3.live.com and encryption to SSL. Authentication is set to "password". Sending email server is set to smtp.live.com with authentication set to Plain. I get a password error message and an invitation to re-enter the password. The same password works fine if I go direct to hotmail in Firefox. Any thoughts? Thanks, Guy

Did you enter your full email address as your username, or just the part before @?

Dear Mark

The question alone fixed it! I had only guy_andrew as username. By adding @hotmail.com she spun into action. Thanks for your help. Now I will attend to the Google Earth issue.

I'm getting to like this Linux stuff.....

Regards

Guy

Spoke too soon: collecting mail is fine but, when sending, I frequently get an error message to the effect that a connection to the (outgoing) smtp server could not be established and timed out. Any thoughts?

Hello,

I had the same problem. I could receive Hotmail e-mails but not send. On the receiving mail tag use SSL encryption and on the sending mail tag use TLS encryption. This worked for me.

Allan :)

Hi Allan

Tried TLS on the sending but got this message:

Error while Sending Message

Failed to connect to SMTP server smtp.live.com in secure mode: STARTTLS not supported

changed back to SSL and got this message:

Error while Sending message

Could not connect to smtp.live.com: Connection timed out

BUT: one or two emails have successfully gone out under SSL. Most, however, get the timed out message. So it does work occasionally.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

Check that you have selected SMTP and not sendmail. Also the receive must be set to POP.

My config for Hotmail with Evolution works perfectly.

Allan :)

Hi,

Also check that you have the requiresauthentication box ticked and and <email address hidden> as the user name.

Regards,

Allan :)
