is Evince capable of viewing tif / tiff files?

Asked by Raviv

is Evince capable of viewing tif / tiff files?
Some websites indicate that Evince should be able to view tif files but I can not read any tif files (single or multiple page) on my system although I have the latest version.

Raviv,

I was able to open this example tiff image in both eog and evince in Jaunty:

http://www.corda.com/devzone/image_type/tiff/features.tif

If you have a tiff image which won't open in these programs, please post a link to it.

thanks Josh,
Wile I can open your example file, it is only a one page document.
The files I have a problem with are multiple pages (can not send you any due to their content).

Hi Raviv,

I googled around for an example multi-page tiff example but couldn't find one. Here are some suggestions though:

 * Try installing and using ghfaxviewer (should be available from apt-get / synaptic). This was recommended for multi-page tiff files in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=28449

  * If that doesn't work, perhaps you can convert your multi-page tiff to a .pdf file. I've found references to a tool called 'tiff2pdf', but this doesn't appear to be offered in the Jaunty repositories. Imagemagick (should be available from repositories) might also work here. You might be able to find and install one of these, or something similar, to do the job.

  * If none of the above work, try to find or create an example multi-page tiff file which you can repost here, and I'll try to find another tool for the job.

I've just used ghfaxviewer successfully on a multi page tif file. Evince was able to display the file but refused to print it.

Hi Raviv,

I noticed that you said you were using the latest version of Evince, but you didn't say on what version of Ubuntu. If it was on one of the 9.10 Karmic Koala alphas, it's possible you were/are affected by bug #465192. A fix for this is now in Karmic-proposed and has been verified by QA, so it should be in Karmic-updates soon.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Raviv for more information if necessary.
