When will recently versions be uploaded to ubuntu oficial repositories?

Asked by Akronix

Hello.

I'm looking forward a new feature: delete annotations, recently implemented in evince but in newer versions of it.
The version of evinceI have from ubuntu 14.04 repositories is 3.10.4, but the last version of evince is 3.14; is it going to be a long time until we have available newer versions of evince??

Greetings.

When you click on "Overview" above you wil see that version 3.14 wil be part of the upcoming Ubuntu 14.10.

Ubuntu is no rolling release. That means that program version for a certain Ubuntu release usually stay at the version that was the current stable version at the moment when that Ubuntu release was published. New program versions are contained only in higher Ubuntu releases.

So there is no plan to update evince for Ubuntu 14.04, unless the version delivered with that release has critical bugs that are cured with a higher version, or important improvements. This requires a special procedure, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

If you want to have evince 3.14 on Ubuntu 14.04 you can:
1. search for a PPA that contains that updated version
2. create a PPA yourself
3. compile that version yourself
4. request a backport of the version for Ubuntu 14.10 to 14.04 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports
