For performing a file system check do the following:
Open a terminal and issue the command
sudo touch /forcefsck
(You will be asked for your password but there will not be any further output.)
Then reboot your computer. An an early stage of the next boot process a file system check on your root file system will be performed. Please carefully watch for error or warning messages.
