evince bitmaps don't dither smoothly

I have a number of pdf files which actually contained scanned images of pages. Using evince these are unreadable except when very zoomed in - however something like xpdf does a good job of displaying these. Presumably xpdf is doing a better job of scaling/dithering the image? Can evince do this?
