compatibility problem between .pdf and hp j4580

Asked by Rev Pat

I am unable to print a mail-in rebate coupon from a .pdf to my HP OfficeJet J4580; only a blank page comes through, even though the Ubuntu test page printed properly. I should be able to print from my desktop.

Please help me resolve the issue between Ubuntu and HP OfficeJet J4580, so I can print the mail-in rebate coupon. The scanner has not been working properly, it is a new machine.

You can't print direct from the desktop, but you should be able to print from the document viewer. Can you print any other PDF documents? For that matter, can you print from any other application - Open Office/Libre Office.

What release of Ubuntu have you installed?

Try a different PDF viewer such as Okular or ePDFViewer and see if you can print from that.

Failing all that, install The Gimp image editor and see if you can print from that. Gimp can import a page from a PDF document.

Chris.

The HP still does not copy, which should be separate from Linux. Is there an all-in-one (printer, scanner, copier) that works well with Linux?

So the problem was that the default document viewer would not print successfully, but another document viewer would? That's very strange.

Would it be possible to get a copy of the problem PDF? I'd like to investigate what is going on, since I"ve never had any trouble printing.

For three in one printers you might have a look at the compatibility lists and see what is recommended. You should be able to get everything working with the one you've go however.

Thanks,

Chris

The default document viewer would not print this .pdf, although it did
print with Okular, thank you for the recommendation.

The printer does not copy at all. I got very confused trying to download
the driver from the HP Web site, and Ubuntu says there are no
compatibility issues, and I am not clever enough to figure out a
workaround (still just a baby geek, fumbling through Linux as best I
can, grateful because it saved me).

Launchpad Answers does not support email attachments. Can you post the .pdf file somewhere on the Internet, and post a link to it here?

Similar problem; I tried printing pages from a file downloaded from e-mail; the pages came out blank, although there is toner in the printer. It appears as though the information was sent to the printer from the computer and nothing was printed.

Can you help with this problem?
