document viewer "can't open directory"

Asked by Terry Moody

Downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Dell desktop and now cannot open any document via (Places > Documents, Music, Trash, etc.).

I receive the notice "Document Viewer Unable to open document; Can't open directory" for all documents.

I downloaded Okular and can open files but not copy, move, or delete. I created a Doc folder on my desktop and copied my files from my backup drive. But this means that I have duplicate files on my computer.

Will appreciate any lead. Thanks in advance, tmoody.

It sounds like your mime type associations are broken, and you need to re-associate nautilus with directories, rather than document viewer.

Open nautilus (the file browser, you may need to launch it from the terminal with ctrl+alt+T, then "nautlius", no quotes), select a folder, then right click it, and set open with, then choose nautilus.

oops, the bit in quotes is "nautilus".

Can you help with this problem?
