Go to Places > Downloads and right click what you want to remove and then "Move to trash"
Thanks for the quick reply .Ok - when i move the cursor over the file I want to remove a box forms around it . When I right click the box turns white while the right mouse button is depressed and returns to normal when released .Thats all that happens . No menu of options appears at all .Same on all downloads.Left click opens them - but still no option for deleting the open file seem to be available. Thanks ---mat

No skype is not installed.I wonder whether It would be difficult to reinstall Ubuntu , if that might fix it?

Which version of ubuntu are you using?
You may want to read about file management in chapter 4 of this book (the PDF is free):

Whilst reinstalling ubuntu would work, its a bit like knocking down your house to empty the bin.
Can you help with this problem?
