A4 postscript files are displayed as Letter

I have postscript files that are A4 in size. When displayed by evince (0.8.1) they are displayed as Letter size, which means that text is lost from the top.

I have checked that the files really are A4 using gimp and (on a friend's machine) ghostview. The problem only occurs in evince.

I have looked at #6846 on this forum, which is about A4 files _printing_ as letter, and tried the "LC_PAPER=" fix suggested there, but this has not solved the problem.
