Document viewer cannot select one column in some two-columned PDF's

When trying to select a sentence or paragraph from one (of the two) column(s) of certain PDF files (a scientific paper), paragraphs of the other column are selected as well. It is like Document Viewer 2.30.1 does not recognize the columns in all PDF-files.
Copying and pasting text from some two-columned PDF file is therefore impossible, unless I will after pasting delete all the fragments of the other column that came along.
