Lets try a simpler route. First of all, did you download the right driver?
For instance, this is a Linux Brother MFC210 driver for the debian distribution (I assume you are not using a 64 bit version of Ubuntu):

Let me make it clear: printer is installed. It is recognized by the computer. When I send a print job to the printer, the printer says it is receiving data. It does not print.

1) Find out which PPD is in use.
For every installed printer there is a copy of the companion PPD in the /etc/cups/ppd/ directory, named like your printer with a .ppd extension.
You can look at a PPD in use for a particular printer through your browser (if your CUPS daemon is running) by pointing it to http://
(Note MFC-210C.ppd is only a guess, use the one you find in /etc/cups/ppd/)
Amongst the first 25 lines of this file you should recognize lines like the following:
*PCFileName: "escp2-1290.ppd"
*Manufacturer: "EPSON"
*Product: "(GIMP-print v4.1.99-b1)"
*ModelName: "escp2-1290"
*ShortNickName: "EPSON Stylus Photo 1290"
*NickName: "EPSON Stylus Photo 1290, CUPS+GIMP-print v4.1.99-b1"
Most important is the line starting "*NickName...". It should always be there and tell you which sort of PPD is in use. Supply this information, if it is related to your problem!
(If you are not able to access the file through you browser, the command "head -n 25 /etc/cups/
Amongst possible tags for the PPDs you might find things like:
"CUPS+GIMP-print v4.1.99-b1"
"CUPS v1.1.9"
"ESP Print Pro 4.1.8"
"Foomatic + stp-4.0"
or similar.
Supply this little piece of information; most of the time it is important.
2) Find out which filters are called by CUPS upon a print attempt..
Switch on the "debug" mode in the LogLevel directive for your CUPS daemon. Edit /etc/cups/
Now print a job. Watch what is written to your CUPS error log. It normally sits in /var/log/

Cesare Tirabassi ,
I can't print with my Brother MFC 210C on Ubuntu 7.04.
This is how i tried to install:
Plugged in MFC 210c to power. Plugged it in to USB port on computer.
Went to System/
I checked my CUPS error log (/var/log/
E [23/Jun/
E [23/Jun/
E [23/Jun/
E [23/Jun/
That last line (cupsdAuthorize: Local authentication certificate not found!) is repeated over and over again.
Please help.
