EOG EXIF data not available

EXIF data is not seen in EOG 2.22.3 (hardy).
The Image Viewer Manual states that libexif must be installed. I have found no package libexif. apt-get was used to reinstall libexif12 (0.6.16-2.1) and the system was restarted. Still no-joy.
The Image Viewer Manual says to use View - "Image Information in Pane" or Ctrl-I to see EXIF - but for me "Image Information in Pane" does not show on View menu.
A jpeg image with known EXIF information is loaded when I try and inspect its EXIF data.
Any suggestions to enable EXIF view in EOG?
